Alan Schaeffer Biography

Alan was the owner of Ordinary Bike Shop, an unusual shop in rural
Connecticut.  Over the 16 years he owned the shop, Alan gained a reputation as a master fit technician.  He is a skilled carpenter and has many interests, including sailing and photography.

Alan majored in philosophy at Gordon College.  Being both a mechanic and philosopher, he has a passion to understand how things work (or don't) and why.

Alan found that just selecting an educational alternative is not enough.  Without understanding the causes of the school mess, people are still victims of it.

Alan and Joyce knew they and their children must come to understand the causes of declining culture in order to know how to live and do good in it.  These questions led him to the first Alliance conference in 1994 and to support the Alliance from the beginning.

In order to work for the Alliance, Alan moved from the East Coast with his wife, Joyce, and their five home- educated children, to Fresno, California.

Now Alan puts his passion to work by helping parents understand their vocation as parents.  He has re-designed the approach the Alliance takes to help more people come to know what they can do about the school mess.

If you would like Alan to come speak at your gathering or an event, he would love to share his passion for helping others through the education minefield.

Alerts us to solutions and benefits of parents embracing independence

Marshall Fritz’s excellent analysis alerts us to the problems and the harm of government control of education. Building on this, Alan Schaeffer’s passion as the new leader of the Alliance is to alert us to the solutions and the benefits of parents embracing independence in education right now.

Helps families remove their children from ‘harm’s way’

Alan Schaeffer brings fresh ideas and fresh energy to the Alliance to help advance us to the next level as we continue to challenge the concept of government schooling while expanding efforts to help families actually remove their children from ‘harm's way.’

Provides ammunition for the education freedom movement

Alan has a sharp intellect, and a keen sense of the special role the Alliance has played among the now several dozen Christian ministries and other organizations working in the vineyard of K-12 education.  He is an original thinker, who will provide philosophical and ideological ammunition for the education freedom movement.

Developed a welcoming bridge for parents to cross

Alan is an articulate and dedicated spokesman for the great cause of separation. He is a man of vision, and I really like his focus on helping families get their children out of government schools. The new web site he has developed is awesome – what a welcoming bridge for parents to cross into a new world of freedom for their children! Alan's approach could well bring about a world-changing movement.

President, Advocates for Self-Government

Inspires people to choose the separation approach

I’ve had lots of contact with activists. My experience with Alan is unique. He’s humble; asks questions. Best of all, he actually utilizes good advice. Alan wants to inspire people to choose the separation approach. How? With the stories of real people who’ve done it! It’s an attractive method for growing the Alliance.
